The company plans to invest up to 250 million Euros to build a data center in St Ghislain to support Google’s online operations and create up to 120 permanent jobs. In addition, Google will create up to 300 construction jobs during the building of the centre, which will begin shortly.
“It is a very significant boost to St Ghislain and to the Wallonia region. Google is a successful company and we are proud that it has chosen to invest in our region,” Minister-President Di Rupo said. “The jobs that Google will create are very positive news for us. The Wallonia Government, the Office for Foreign Investors (AWEX) and IDEA have worked hard to attract companies like Google so today shows that our work delivers results for local people”, adds Minister Marcourt.
“Google will be a very welcome part of the St Ghislain community. We are delighted that the company has decided that our town is the right place in which to invest. I know that local people will be very happy with the news, not least because of the jobs created,” said Daniel Olivier, Mayor of St Ghislain.
“The data center we’re planning to build in St Ghislain will help support continued growth in our online services,” said Francois Sterin, Google Inc. “We look forward to joining the local community and are grateful for the support we have received.”
Google’s data centres process and store information in order to allow users throughout the world to use its many web-based services, including search.
