This is the conclusion of a study of citations in world-class scientific journals. Belgium is in second place after Switzerland, taking into account the amount of funding.
For more than 20 years Belgium has had a programme of fundamental research known as ‘inter-university poles of attraction’. These are networks of excellence linking at least one university in each region. Ever since this programme has been in operation, Belgium’s position has improved consistently.
Over the last five years all Belgian universities have been above the world average, even more so in certain areas such as neuroscience, research, dentistry, IT, engineering and social science.
